Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Mi Querida Ancho Corto Cigar Review

Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust was founded by Steve Saka in 2015 after his years as president and CEO of Drew Estate. Mi Querida, Spanish for “my dearest” and a Nicaraguan colloquialism for a secret mistress, was the company’s second release after Sobremesa, arriving at the 2016 IPCPR Trade Show as Saka’s first Connecticut Broadleaf maduro under the Dunbarton banner. The blend pairs a U.S.-grown Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper with a Nicaraguan binder and filler, and it is handmade at Nicaragua American Cigars S.A. (NACSA) in Estelí under master cigarmaker Raúl Disla. The Ancho Corto is a 5 × 52 robusto among the line’s regular-production sizes, which also include the Gordita, Fino Largo, Ancho Largo, Muy Gordo Grande, and Gran Búfalo.

Review

First Third

Black coffee and leather on the light, with a good amount of black coffee on the palate and finish. A slight natural tobacco sweetness comes through on the finish. Some nutty notes coming through halfway through the first third. Leather is big in this first third, and a dried fruit note comes through with the leather and black coffee. A dark cherry note is coming through at the end of the first third, with leather and pepper on the finish.

Second Third

A slightly sweeter leather and chocolate note are coming through at the start of the second third. I’m still getting the dark cherry note every now and then, with black coffee and some pepper on the finish. Sweet leather continues with some nutty notes on the palate and a sweet and peppery note on the finish. A tea-like note is coming through on the finish with a little bit of sweetness, almost like a slightly sweetened green tea with a little bit of pepper. More leather notes are coming through now, and I’m also getting a root beer–like note on the finish as well, replacing the tea note from earlier.

Final Third

The final third starts with the spicy tea note from earlier, along with leather and black coffee on the finish. The tea note is coming out stronger, turning into almost a floral grassy note, still with a lot of leather, which is a unique combination. A dark chocolate note is coming out again, this time with some bitter black coffee and a tang on the finish. Getting to the end of the cigar, a woody note is coming through, still with a slight bittersweet note and pepper on the finish.
