Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro Gordo

Matt Booth, has established Room101 as a fixture in the boutique (salon) cigar world. The Johnny Tobacconaut series first launched in 2015 as a playful space-themed line inspired by a fictional astronaut who travels the galaxy in search of exceptional tobacco. With its distinctive astronaut-and-shovel logo, Johnny Tobacconaut remains one of Room101’s most recognizable and enjoyed offerings.

Review

First Third

Dark chocolate, leather, and some earthy cedar greet the light. Cedar and pepper show on the retrohale. Black coffee and cedar notes settle in as the first third gets underway. The aroma shifts from pure cedar into something more savory. Chocolate cedar and leather become the main players. At the halfway point of the first third the pepper on the retrohale has quieted considerably. The burn line is amazing and the construction looks phenomenal with excellent smoke output. Closing in on the end of the first third a slight nuttiness begins to appear.

Second Third

The second third opens with that slight nuttiness continuing alongside some pepper on the palate and a few puffs of darker cherry. Approaching the halfway mark a slightly sweeter chocolate note joins the light nuttiness, leather, and lingering cedar on the retrohale. The burn remains incredibly even. Past the midpoint more leather and cedar take over with almost no pepper left, turning the profile nearly creamy. Near the end of the second third cedar and black coffee return while sweetness and chocolate fade for the moment. The finish stays smooth with coffee, leather, and a touch of salt.

Final Third

The final third brings the chocolate notes back with a hint of sweetness while leather and cedar hold the finish. The finish is long. Salted nuts appear though leather stays present on the finish along with more cedar. Cedar and baking spices grow more prevalent. The burn line and draw remain perfect. Plenty of cedar continues with a light chocolate note as pepper starts to creep back in. Everything stays smooth though the finish shortens a bit. More chocolate returns with the cedar and strong espresso notes arrive as the cigar picks up strength. As the final third continues, more consistent cedar and baking spices, and leather. Only small tastes of chocolate in this section, the pepper builds a little witht the strength at the end of the cigar as well.
