Johnny Tobacconaut Connecticut

Room101’s Johnny Tobacconaut is a space-themed cigar with a mascot to match and a few lives behind it. Room101 launched it at the 2015 IPCPR Trade Show in New Orleans as a Nicaraguan puro out of Honduras. When Room101 and Davidoff parted ways, the line went on hiatus. It resurfaced as a limited Luxury Cigar Club exclusive called Chapter 1, with a new Ecuadorian Connecticut and Nicaraguan blend in a 6 x 56 figurado.

At the 2023 PCA Trade Show, Room101 re-launched it as a regular offering, now made at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez in Estelí, Nicaragua. The blend uses an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper, a Mexican binder and Nicaraguan fillers. It comes in four sizes, Robusto, Toro, Gordo and Perfecto, priced from $8.99 to $15.99. Forged Cigar Company distributes it, and it reached stores in August 2023.

Review

First Third

Slightly sweet cedar with almond or nutty notes on the palate and aroma, and a good amount of pepper on the retrohale. Light cream and coffee start to come out on the finish. Creamy notes continue to come through, along with a nutty note and pepper on the retrohale. Cedar shows on the initial draw, transitioning into a creamy, nutty note on the finish with pepper on the retrohale. The cigar is slightly sweet, with creamy cedar and a peppery finish. Near the end of the first third, some earthy notes start to come out.

Second Third

The cedar comes more to the forefront of the flavor profile and takes center stage at the start of the second third. Creamy pepper notes still come through. The draw is easy, nearly perfect, with lots of smoke, and it’s very enjoyable. Sweetness and pepper both increase, with a good amount of white pepper and spice on the finish. The sweetness turns lighter, almost a marshmallow type of sweetness alongside slightly creamy cedar notes. The flavors are very reminiscent of signature Davidoff profiles.

Final Third

The sweetness continues, with creamy notes on the finish and white pepper spice throughout. A grassy note starts to accompany the creamy cedar and pepper. The creamy notes have dropped off considerably since the second third, leaving woody cedar with an almost grassy note. At the very end of the finish, some cream starts coming back with some spice.
