Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Umbagog

Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust is the company Steve Saka started in 2015 after serving as president and CEO of Drew Estate. It is a family company known for tight standards and handmade Nicaraguan cigars produced at factories in Estelí, including NACSA.

Umbagog is the line Saka built as the most affordable regular offering in DTT’s portfolio. He named it after Umbagog Lake, his favorite fishing water on the border of New Hampshire and Maine. The blend uses Connecticut Broadleaf wrappers set aside as too imperfect for Mi Querida, over Nicaraguan binder and filler. Saka framed it as a rugged outdoor cigar meant for work, hiking, and time on the water, sold in paper wrapped bundles of ten.

Review

First Third

Pepper, dark cherry. Some cedar on the light, pepper and cedar on the retrohale. Slight sweetness to the finish. Pepper, leather, and dark cherry notes, with leather and pepper on the finish. Leather is becoming much stronger, pepper continues as well, but the flavor profile is dominated by leather with a slight sweetness on the finish. The draw is pretty firm, but definitely usable. There's almost a slight barbecue sauce tang to it, very very slight once the strong leather subsides. Still a very slight sweet and tangy note on the finish. Slight cocoa note coming in on the finish with a slight sweetness as well. Dark cherry coming back on the palate and finish, with slight pepper as well. Very enjoyable.

Second Third

Starting the second third, the leather is still strong, with a dark cherry and slight citrus tang. Slight sweetness on the finish. Slight black coffee note with cedar coming out with the leather and tangy notes. The tangy note starts getting stronger with the leather, still a slight sweetness with some pepper on the finish. Cedar is starting to come through more now with the leather, still with a slight sweetness and pepper on the finish. A slight licorice note is coming through, along with lots of cedar, some leather and a slight sweetness on the finish. Got an interesting slight pastry note on the retrohale and finish, largely the notes are leather, cocoa powder, and a slight tang that has lost its sweetness in the second third. Slight dark cherry note coming out near the end of the second third, leather is still very strong. There is still a tang on the finish, with a slight espresso note.

Final Third

Starting the final third, toasted woody notes are coming through, still with lots of leather and a slight tang and pepper on the finish. Lots of cedar in the final third, with an unsweetened tang on the finish. Cherry is coming out to match the cedar in the final third, lots of leather on the finish. Getting to the end of the final third, slight nutty note comes out, but the primary notes are leather and a slight tanginess on the finish.
