Tatuaje Black Label Petite Corona

Tatuaje is Pete Johnson’s brand, made at My Father Cigars S.A. in Estelí, Nicaragua. Black Label started in 2007 as Johnson’s private reserve and later became a regular-production Nicaraguan puro: sun-grown Criollo wrapper from Estelí over Nicaraguan binder and filler. The Petite Corona BC joined that line in March 2020. It is a 4 x 40, the smallest regular Black Label size, packed in 50-count cabinets. At launch the MSRP was $4.75 per cigar. The “BC” marks the covered foot used on this vitola.

Review

First Half

Lots of pepper on the light, with almost to creamy dessert note but not that sweet. Like a peppery almond coffee note. I quickly switches to cedar and peppery notes, with almost a coffee leather finish. Smoky or charred wood notes as well. Back to the more almond desert note, again not sweet, but definitely present. Espresso finish. Cedar and pepper continue, with some other spices and coffee on the finish. Pepper has definitely amped up, some earthy coffee notes are coming through as well. The dessert is historying unfortunately no more of that. Though I am getting a slight vanilla spice.

Second Half

In the second half cedar, pepper and slight vanilla continue. Ever so slight Berry note is coming through, but the main notes are cedar and pepper. The coffee has gotten more subtle on the finish, but still very enjoyable. The charred wood note continues, while the pepper and spices ramp up. Black coffee finish. Long finish. Cedar and pepper are still the main notes in the second half, ever once in a while some more of the spices come in, but not as strong as before. Getting near the end some bitterness is coming through, not completely unenjoyable as it mixes with the cedar and pepper, but not as enjoyable as the cinnamon and slight vanilla notes from earlier.
