Aj Fernandez New World Oscuro Redondo

In 2014 AJ Fernandez introduced the New World line together with his father Ismael Fernandez. The series draws its name from the historic discovery of tobacco in the Americas. The original blend later known as New World Oscuro is a Nicaraguan puro that uses a dark Oscuro wrapper a Jalapa binder and fillers from Ometepe Condega and Esteli.

Review

First Third

Chocolate, pepper, and spices greeted the light, with solid pepper on the retrohale. A slight sweetness accompanied the pepper, while the finish showed earthy leather and more pepper. Dark espresso notes soon joined, keeping a good amount of spice on both the retrohale and finish. Cedar and leather strengthened as the third progressed, still paired with pepper, espresso, and leather on the finish. Cedar and coffee notes continued to build, with leather and pepper lingering. A nutty aroma appeared. The core flavors of cedar, espresso, leather, and a light coffee-pepper finish remained very enjoyable, with a long finish. Near the end of the first third the profile stayed consistent: leather, cedar, pepper, slight chocolate, and espresso, with the earlier sweetness having faded.

Second Third

Cedar remained strong at the start of the second third, joined by coffee and espresso notes, while the pepper moderated. Chocolate and pepper then grew more prominent, and the overall strength of the cigar increased. Floral or citrus notes appeared alongside the coffee and espresso on the finish. A slight sweetness returned, combining with more cedar in an almost semi-candy-like way—a new note layered over the chocolate and leather. The finish stayed smooth. Past the halfway point, leather and pepper began to build again. The pepper continued to intensify, accompanied by slight sweetness, espresso, and leather on the finish.

Final Third

Floral and espresso notes carried into the final third, still with a slight sweetness and pepper on the finish. Cedar returned, joined by chocolate, while the pepper strengthened on the finish. Cedar and floral notes sat on the palate with pepper and sweetness, plus a touch of leather. Pepper continued to rise, and an almost toasted bread note emerged alongside cedar and leather on the finish. As the third progressed, cedar became a primary note with strong pepper. Hints of baked bread remained, though sweetness was still absent at this stage, leaving a peppery finish. Slight nuttiness began combining with the cedar while heavy pepper held on the finish. A very light sweetness eventually crept back in. On the retrohale a semi-candy peanut note appeared with lots of spice. The smoke warmed slightly as the cigar neared its end.
